Kujala (b. 1976 in Berlin) began her professional music studies in ”Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler” in Berlin. Her main subjects were concert accordion and correpetition. After moving to Finland in 1998 she studied concert accordion and organ performance at the Sibelius-Academy in the department of performing arts. She gained her Master of Music exam in 2006 after absolving her final recitals with highest honors in both instruments. Her debut concert took place in 2007 in the Finlandia-Hall and her debut CD ”Organ Triptychon” including works by Reger, Liszt and V. Kujala was released in 2008. In spring 2009 she studied organ performance in Paris with Marie-Louise Langlais and Eric Lebrun as a stipendiat of Cité Internationale des Arts.
Currently she is attaining her artistic Doctor of Music -degree in the Sibelius-Academy focusing on the theme “Organ – an instrument for contemporary music”. Kujala worked as an assistant of the church music department 2008-2011. She teaches organ performance at the Sibelius Academy since 2009.
Susanne Kujala has wide work experience. She has performed as an organist, accordionist and pianist in various set-ups ranging from opera orchestra to different chamber music ensembles. From 2001 she has worked as an accordionist in the children productions of the Finnish National Opera. She worked as a correpetitor for the production of Kurt Weill's opera "The Rise and Fall of Mahagonny", which was performed at the Helsinki Festival in 2011. She has premiered works for organ or accordion by composers such as Kalevi Aho, Antti Auvinen, Friedrich Goldmann, Sampo Haapamäki, Sami Klemola, Veli Kujala, Minna Leinonen, Paola Livorsi, Uljas Pulkkis, Vesa Valkama, Olli Virtaperko ja Helmut Zapf. Her organ repertoire ranges from early baroque music to contemporary compositions. On accordion she performs mainly contemporary music but also keyboard works by J.S. Bach. She has premiered the double concerto for accordion, quarter-tone accordion and chamber orchestra by Joachim Schneider with her husband and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra conducted by John Storgårds in February 2011. In January 2011 she has also premiered Trois Monde for organ and live-electronics by Maija Hynninen.
BIS Records releases a new CD with Kalevi Ahos chamber music including his Sonata for two accordions played by Susanne and Veli Kujala in 2012.
