Olli Porthan is one of the best known Finnish organists and organ pedagogues. He studied organ at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki under Enzio Forsblom and at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam under Jacques van Oortmerssen as well as at many international master classes. He received first prize in the 1980 Lahti organ competition. After receiving his diploma in church and organ music, he gave his First Concert at the Finlandia-hall in Helsinki in 1983. Since 1983, Porthan gives annually several concerts in Finland and in the other Nordic Countries, in several European countries as well as in Russia and Japan. He has also made several radio recordings and performed on television, in addition to having recorded organ works and chamber music from different periods.
Since 1980, Porthan has taught organ music at the Sibelius Academy, as professor since 1988, as well as at many international master classes. Porthan has been asked to be a member of the jury in many international organ competitions. He has acted as chairman for the Finnish Organ society (Organum society) during 1986-1990. Since 1992, Porthan has been Artistic Leader of the Janakkala baroque week. He held the position of the leader of the Church Music Department at the Sibelius Academy during 1997- 2001. Porthan's expertise has been widely used in various organ building projects.
