Axel Flierl was born 1976 in Nuremberg, Germany. He studied sacred music and concert organ and concert organ improvisation. He was a student of Edgar Krapp and Wolfgang Hörlin at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich as well as of Thierry Escaich and Vincent Warnier at Saint-Étienne-du-Mont in Paris (France) from 2004 to 2006, where he studied the complete organ works by Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986).
He was granted several renowned scholarships by the Bavarian Ministry of Education and the Arts, the Franco-German High Council for Cultural Affairs, and the French Government. His studies included time as a visiting student at the “Cité Internationale des Arts” and the “Cité Internationale Universitaire” in Paris (France).
In 2006 he was assigned the post of organist and choir director at the Basilica St. Peter in Dillingen an der Donau (Bavaria), where in 2007 he initiated around the great Sandtner-organ the international annual organ festival “Dillinger Basilikakonzerte”, as their founder and artistic director.
Since 2012 he is preparing a graduation in musicology at Karlsruhe University of Music about the organ works of the german composer Karl Höller (1907-1987).
Apart from working as an organ soloist internationally in Australia (Melbourne) and Europe (including performances at renowned european festivals as Notre-Dame de Paris, Festival di Treviso, Cathedrals of Munich, Passau, Bamberg, Fulda, Freiburg im Breisgau, Dresden, Lausanne, Dijon, Narbonne, Edinburgh, Turku etc.), Axel Flierl made an excellent name for himself through TV-, radio- and several CD- recordings with works by Bach, Reger, Liszt, Höller and Duruflé, as well as through numerous music publications.
